FAQs on ICAI’s CPE Course ‘Computer Accounting and Auditing Techniques (CAAT)’

CPE course on CAAT is meant for skill development of ICAI members as the accountants and auditors have to increasingly depend on and make use of the computers for their requirements of financial analysis and reporting in the matters relating to accounting, auditing, taxation and other requirements.

The ICAI’s Regional Councils/ Branches/ CPE Chapters are the Programme Organising Units (POU’s) for the CPE Course on CAAT. The office of the Committee on Information Technology approves specific batches of the CPE Course on CAAT based on proposals of Regional Council/ Branches considering requests received from members, to suitably arrange for batches of the course.

ICAI Members desirous of joining the CPE Course on CAAT may contact their respective Regional Councils/ Offices/ Branches/ CPE Chapters and request to start suitable batches of CAAT in which they can participate. The said CAAT POU’s would be organizing batches of CPE Course on CAAT by suitably arranging training infrastructure and faculty members on self-supporting basis and would be responsible for the organizing the batches.

What is the Syllabus for CAAT Course?

Syllabus of CPE Course on CAAT includes 100 Hours of Training (76 Hours Hands on), as under:

i) Windows 2000/XP : Intro to Facilities & Commonly used features – 3 Hours / 0 Hands on

ii) Using MS Excel as an Audit Tool : An Intro., Case Studies, Data Analysis &Reporting Features – 18 Hours / 12 Hands on

iii) RDBMS Concepts : Database Concepts, Terminology, Models – An Intro; RDBMS, Data Modelling using ERD, DB Design using Normalization – 6 Hours / 0 Hands on

iv) MSAccess : Creating Databases & Tables – An Intro; Event Handling & Report Generation; Using Macros – An Intro.; Using Queries – An Intro.; Case Study – 15 Hours / 12 Hands on

v) Structured Query Language (SQL) : Introduction to Data Definition Language Statements & Data Manipulation Language Statements (Creating Tables, Selecting Data, Inserting Data, Updating Records, Dropping a Table, Querying Database, Aggregating Data, Grouping, Ordering Data, Joining Tables etc.) & Case Studies – 15 Hours / 12 Hands on

When can I join the CAAT Course

The CPE Course on CAAT can be joined anytime thru online registration with the ICAI, followed with submission of required documents and applicable fees with the ISA/ CAAT Helpdesk of the ICAI. Thereafter, one can join a batch at nearest Regional Council/ Branch/ CPE Chapter, for which advance enquiry before enrolling for a batch is advisable to avoid inconvenience.

Who may join CAAT Course?

The ICAI members or say Chartered Accountants enrolled as member of the Institute are eligible for joining the CAAT course. Newly qualified CAs can apply but their registration for CAAT would be made only after their name is entered in the register of members.

What are the Objectives of CAAT Course?

The CPE course on CAAT is basically a practical hands-on training course for ICAI members, to access databases beneath accounting software and enable them to create SQL Queries, create Report, develop audit trail, create MIS reports and actually utilize computer as an effective tool for Accounting, Financial Planning and Forecasting Treasury Management, Financial Management and Auditing.

Can ISA pass members join CAAT Course?

CAAT is to provide practical skills and exposure to ICAI members in technology applications, especially towards analysis and reporting for financial/ auditing, and hence those who have already passed the ISA course can join the CAAT Course to enhance their practical exposure.

Is the CPE Course on CAAT mandatory for pursuing ISA Course?

It is not mandatory to do CAAT Course before joining ISA course, however it is desirable to do so as it provides hands-on practical exposure to use of computers for typical financial analysis and reporting requirements.

What is the Course Fee for CPE Course on CAAT and how it must be paid?

ICAI has prescribed the course fee for CAAT payable in two components as follows:

i) Registration Fee of Rs.1500/- payable to “The Secretary, ICAI” by DD/ Pay Order payable at Delhi/ New Delhi;

ii) Training Fee: A Variable amount ranging from Rs.4500/- (minimum) to Rs.6000/- (maximum) payable to the Regional Council/ Branch/ CPE Chapter in the account name to be confirmed with the respective office.

What Certificate do I get on participating in the CPE Course on CAAT?

The CPE Course of ICAI on CAAT is basically a skill development course as a measure of Continuing Professional Education (CPE). Accordingly, a CPE certificate giving the requisite CPE hours (currently 20) is issued on successfully completing the course. No other certificate is issued by the ICAI.

Where do I send my form for registration to CPE Course on CAAT?

ICAI members aspiring to join CPE Course on CAAT have to first fill the online application and then submit the dully filled in / signed applications along with course registration fee to the following address:

Candidates may contact their nearest ICAI office, branch, etc. to organise a suitable batch for their benefit. Registration Letter is normally received within about 10 days Course and Course Materials (Three Volumes & CAAT Resources CD) within about a fortnight from receipt of duly completed application with course fees at ICAI.
