Compilation of Statistics on Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2014-15 released by CBDT
The CBDT had taken the initiative in April 2016 and had proactively released timeseries data relating to direct tax collections, number of taxpayers, cost of collection, number of PANs allotted and data relating to distribution of income and tax payable in the returns.
In continuation of the efforts, the Income Tax Department/ CBDT has compiled and released the statistics of Income Tax Returns filed for the Assessment Year (AY) 2014-15.
The objective of publishing this statistics is to encourage wider use and analysis of Income-tax data by Departmental personnel and academicians. This compilation of information is based on the methodology as under:
i. The template for statistics was prepared on the basis of previous statistics published by the Department and assessment of information available in various databases of the Income Tax Department.
ii. The statistics have been generated from e-filed returns (digitally signed or where ITR-V has been received) and paper returns captured in system upto 30 Sept. 2016
iii. In cases where more than one return is submitted, the values in the latest return have been considered.
iv. Consistency Rules were defined (given below) to eliminate returns with inconsistent data. 3,96,88,804 returns were checked against consistency rules and 3,91,28,247 returns meeting the consistency rules were used for statistical analysis
v. Certain statistics have been mentioned in lakh (100 thousand) and crore (10 million).
vi. Various terms used in the statistics have been defined below respective tables.
