Section 2(30) of CGST Act: Meaning of “Composite Supply”

As per Section 2(30) of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act, 2017, unless the context otherwise requires, the term “composite supply” has been defined, as under:

Section 2(30) of CGST Act: Definition of “Composite Supply” (CHAPTER I – PRELIMINARY)

“composite supply” means a supply made by a taxable person to a recipient consisting of two or more taxable supplies of goods or services or both, or any combination thereof, which are naturally bundled and supplied in conjunction with each other in the ordinary course of business, one of which is a principal supply.

Illustration: Where goods are packed and transported with insurance, the supply of goods, packing materials, transport and insurance is a composite supply and supply of goods is a principal supply.

The Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act, 2017 was notified by Govt. on 12 April, 2017 and CBIC has notified the commencement date for various Sections/ Provisions thereof from time to time. Subsequently, Govt. has notified the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) (Amendment) Act, 2018 on 30 Aug. 2018. However, commencement date of amended provisions of various Sections is to be separately notified by CBIC, except where specifically mentioned in the CGST Amendment Act, 2018 itself.
