Government of India Notifies ‘Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016’
The Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016 enacted w.e.f. 1 Sept. 2016, by GOI completely prohibits employment of children below 14 years and prohibits employment of adolescents in the age group of 14 to 18 years in hazardous occupations and processes and regulates working conditions therein.
As per Census 2011, main workers in the age group of 5-14 years stood at 43.53 lakh in India. The Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016 provides for stricter punishment of employers for any violations and also provides for making the offence of employing any child or adolescent in contravention of the Act by an employer as cognizable.
It may be noted that the amended provisions empowers the appropriate Government to confer such powers and impose such duties on a District Magistrate as may be necessary, in order to achieve effective enforcement of the provisions of the Act.
