The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently announced that residents can now update their Aadhaar documents online for free. This move is in line with the Digital India initiative and aims to benefit millions of residents. From March 15 to June 14, 2023, residents can avail of this service exclusively on the myAadhaar portal. It’s important to note that physical Aadhaar centers will continue to charge INR 50 for document updates.
Encouraging Uploads on myAadhaar Portal
The UIDAI has been urging residents to upload their Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents on the myAadhaar portal to validate their demographic details. This is particularly important for residents who obtained their Aadhaar cards ten years ago and haven’t updated their information since. By doing so, residents can benefit from improved ease of living, better service delivery, and an enhanced authentication success rate.
Regular Online Update Service
Residents can use the regular online update service or visit their nearest Aadhaar center to change their demographic details such as name, date of birth, and address. In these cases, normal charges will apply.
Updating Documents on myAadhaar Portal
To avail of the free document update facility on the myAadhaar portal, residents can log in using their Aadhaar number. An OTP will be sent to their registered mobile number, following which they can click on the ‘Document Update’ tab, and their existing details will be displayed. If the details are correct, they can proceed by selecting their PoI and PoA documents from the dropdown list and uploading the copies to update their documents. The official UIDAI website has a list of acceptable PoA and PoI documents available for residents to refer to.
Widely Accepted as Proof of Identity
In the past decade, the Aadhaar number has become widely accepted as proof of identity for residents in India. It is now accepted by nearly 1,200 government schemes and programs at both the central and state levels for the delivery of services. Furthermore, several service providers, including financial institutions like banks and NBFCs, use Aadhaar to authenticate and onboard customers seamlessly.
Mandatory Document Update
According to the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016, Aadhaar number holders must update their supporting documents in Aadhaar at least once on completion of every ten years from the date of enrolment for Aadhaar. This is to ensure the continued accuracy of their information.
Free Document Update Facility
The decision to offer free online document updates is a people-centric move by the UIDAI aimed at benefiting millions of residents in India. It will help streamline the Aadhaar update process, which has been a concern for many residents. The free service will also encourage more people to update their demographic details and ensure the continued accuracy of their information. This, in turn, will enhance the ease of living for residents, improve service delivery, and increase the authentication success rate.
